Mount Snow Academy celebrates 50th during winter fundraiser
DOVER - Every year Mount Snow Academy hosts a fundraising event in the winter to help generate money for special projects, scholarships, and operating costs of the school. Some may have attended one or a few of these events, often held at the Grand Summit Resort.
However, this year was special. On Saturday, February 19, celebrating their 50th year, the school hosted their event on school grounds. The fundraiser started with a rail jam in the afternoon, followed by a VIP event and auction on their main campus, formerly the Matterhorn Inn.
The community showed up in great numbers at both events, first attending the rail jam. A rail jam is a competition for snowboard and freeski athletes to showcase their talents by grinding rails and sliding boxes. Around 90 athletes of all ages and abilities came to the school’s backyard terrain park, competing for cash prizes, gear, and trophies. After a last-minute snowstorm, tireless, backbreaking efforts from MSA Action Sports staff ensured the course was set and ready for action. Notable staff included Dave Redden, Anthony Corbo, Sam Marino, Jake Duncan, and Nick Falbo; and last-minute snow deliveries from Jim Sweeney.
Later that evening the festivities continued indoors. Hors d’oeuvres and cocktails were served, with the help of Sara Jasinski and Beer Naked Brewery, while event staff did a wonderful job decorating the building for a proper party to celebrate the 50th anniversary. Overall, the school raised over $95,000 from a wine pull, paddle raise, online and live auction, and ticket sales. One of the items auctioned was a week’s stay in a Park City cabin, generously donated by close friends of the school.
Looking forward, MSA will be having another fundraising event in October. Their annual golf outing will be held at Mount Snow Golf Club and all those interested in participating or donating are welcome to reach out to get on MSA’s mailing list. Visit www.yesmsa.org to sign up.
