Celebrate winter with “Walk to School” day
VERMONT – Embrace the Norwegians’ wintertime secret for a healthy mind, body, and emotional well-being. Cool that cabin fever with a refreshing winter walk to school, work or the grocery store.
Whether or not people and their families have fun this winter could be all about how they approach it mentally. Health psychologist Kari Leibowitz studied what she calls “winter mindsets” in Tromsø, Norway. She discovered the citizens throughout Norway actually look forward to winter. In a December 2020 interview, Leibowitz said that Norwegians spend their winters doing an array of fun outdoor activities mixed with cozy time indoors. She learned to embrace the Norwegian saying that “there’s no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing.”
So dress in warm layers and join Vermont families and school communities on Wednesday, February 2. Celebrate how “Vermont Tough” the state is during Winter Walk to School day. All people need to do to participate is to walk or bike to school, around the neighborhood, to the grocery store or another errand, to a local park, and more. Any winter walking or biking for transportation counts.
Over 23 schools have already signed up to participate, including Wardsboro Elementary and Westminster Center School. Can’t make the walk? That’s fine. Alternate Winter Walk to School day is any other day in February.
Use the #VermontTough hashtag and Local Motion will post them on their social media. Local Motion will also be doing a drawing for prizes from #VermontTough submissions, including Darn Tough socks, reflective gear, and light-up leashes. The prize drawing will be on Tuesday, March 15.
