Walter A. Westhelle

WILMINGTON- Walter A. Westhelle, 83, a resident of Whites Road, died December 10, at Bennington Health and Rehabilitation Center. Mr. Westhelle was born in Norwalk, CT, on May 23, 1935, the son of the late Walter and Katherine Atchison Westhelle. He attended school in Stamford, graduating from Stamford High School and earning his bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from the University of Vermont.
Mr. Westhelle worked as a civil engineer for most of his life and took pride in his profession. He was a member of the US Army Corps of Engineers and a member of the Stamford Old Timers Athletic Association as a football player.  He received this honor at the same time as his brothers, all of whom were noted to be on championship football teams.  He was an avid skier and eventually retired in Vermont  with his loving wife Dee.  Mr. Westhelle was a hard-working man, did not like to sit still for too long, and enjoyed having a Sunday nooner with his wife and friends.  
He was a Red Sox baseball fan and a New York Giant football fan. He especially enjoyed listening to the music of the “Rat Pack.”  Survivors include his sons Walter E  Westhelle and his wife Lydia, of Trumbull, CT, and Stefan Westhelle and his wife Tiffany, of Rye Brook, NY; brothers Kent Westhelle and his wife Beverley, of Savannah, GA, and Robert Westhelle and his wife Mary, of Waitsfield; and grandchildren Charlotte, Brody, and Dylan Westhelle. He was preceded in death by his wife Dorothy “Dee” Field Westhelle on December 18, 2008. Memorial services for Mr. Westhelle will be announced at a later date. There are no visiting hours.
