Robert L. Mundell
BRATTLEBORO- Robert L. Mundell, 93, of West Brattleboro, died on July 20 at Pine Heights Nursing Home. Mr. Mundell, known as Bob, was born in Holyoke, MA, on June 15, 1927. At age 5 he moved with his family to East Dover. He attended high school at Leland & Gray in Townshend, and finished at Columbia High School in Albany, NY.
He enlisted in the Navy in 1945, serving until war’s end. He traveled extensively through the country with his brothers and friends. He married his childhood sweetheart, Loris Benezet, in 1950. They were happily married for 69 years until Loris died in 2019.
In his early years he worked in the lumber industry. In the early 1960s he worked on the St. Lawrence Seaway project in Niagara Falls, NY. He built homes in southern Vermont and also worked for William Staats, of Newfane, as a carpenter. He retired from Landmark College as a maintenance worker. He and Loris owned the Treasure Den Antique Shop. They also ran a hot dog cart and did flea marketing and crafting. During retirement, they wintered in Florida and enjoyed traveling. Bob was also a very big Boston sports enthusiast, especially a lover of the Red Sox.
Their biggest joy was raising their children in East Dover. They resided in East Dover until 2007 when they moved to Hayes Court in West Brattleboro.
Mr. Mundell is survived by a daughter, Donna Russell, of West Brattleboro, and son Robert R. Mundell and daughter-in-law Sandra, of East Dover. He was preceded in death by daughter Katherine Fletcher and her husband Stuart, and by infant twins, daughter Terry and son Gary. He is survived also by grandchildren Scott Russell and wife Barbara, of Florida, Todd Russell, of Springfield, Chris Russell, of West Brattleboro, Russell Mundell, of Chesterfield, NH, and Lisa Robel and husband Daniel of Westmoreland, NH, and great-grandchildren Nicole Russell, Mason Collins, and Ella Robel, as well as many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by six brothers, Melvin, Preston, Graydon, Rusten, Clayton, and Russell, and one sister, Roberta.
