WEST BRATTLEBORO -Nancy Riley Childs, 74, died at Grace Cottage Hospital in Townshend on Thursday, February 18, following a brief illness.
The daughter of Capt. Herbert C. and Isabel (Riley) Childs, she was born in New Haven, CT, on November 22, 1946. She received her early education at Connecticut public schools and graduated from Roger Ludlow high school. She continued her studies, graduating with a BA from Lake Erie College in Ohio. In earlier years she had been employed at the Polaroid Corporation in Boston. Ms. Childs was an avid reader and a skilled wordsmith. She loved being with her family and enjoyed visiting Vermont, where several family members reside. She was the “favorite aunt,” always giving just the right gift and praise to her siblings, nieces, and nephews.
She leaves her brother Andrew R. Childs and his wife Mindy, of West Dover; and sisters Sarah C. Gagnon and her husband John, of Brattleboro, Rebecca C. Miller,  of Montpelier, and Karen C. LaVelle and her husband Michael, of Fairfield, CT. She also leaves nieces and nephews John Andrew Gagnon, Pamela Childs Lavelle, Francis Herbert Lavelle, Daniel Herbert Childs, Riley Oliver Childs, Rachel Miller Reynolds and her husband Thomas Reynolds, and a brand-new grandniece, Paige Miller Reynolds. Many family members remember visiting Ms. Childs while she lived in Boston. She always found great restaurants and was a wonderful host and had a keen eye for clothing and shoeware. She loved ballet and held a love for culture which she shared by offering tickets to live performances.
She was a caregiver for her mother, Isabel, and drove her to appointments and operations or medical procedures as she did for her friends Dotty and Margo. Ms. Childs was preceded in death by her parents and her brother Herbert C. Childs Jr.
Services will be held this coming summer, and she will be laid to rest in the family lot in the Intervale Cemetery in Wilmington. Memorial gifts may be made to the S.D.
