Joan Henry

WILMINGTON - Joan “J.B.” Benson Henry died on Thursday, February 10, after a courageous three-year battle with cancer. She met this challenge with the determination and quiet strength she was known for.
Born in Waterbury, CT, in 1954 to Ralph and Anita Benson, she was a loving sister to Rolfe, Joe, Carol, and Claire.
Joan had a generous heart, a gentle manner and a beautiful girlish smile. Many knew her best for her kindness to others, her creativity, and her love of music. From the moment they met, she became the number one fan of musician husband Gary Henry. She was never happier than when supporting him in his music and dancing joyfully at one of his gigs.
An adventurous and accomplished quilter, gardener, and cook, Joan was always trying something new. Her friends agree that she set the standard they aspired to, continually taking her skills to the next level and helping them to do the same. Friends and family always eagerly anticipated her meals, canned treats, desserts and especially her amazing Christmas cookies and zucchini bread.
But first and foremost, Joan was a dedicated wife to Gary and loving mother to Adam and Nate. Her love of children was also expressed through her 15 years of teaching at Deerfield Valley Elementary School, making her an indelible part of the Wilmington community, where she and Gary have lived since early in their marriage.
As part of that community Joan dedicated her limitless energy and creativity to many local causes and in support of her numerous friends when she was needed. It was never too much trouble for her to do something for someone else, regardless of what may have been happening in her own life. It is perhaps for that selflessness she will be best remembered.
There will be a celebration of Joan’s life for family and friends in Wilmington, the date and location to be announced. The family asks that, in lieu of flowers donations be sent to Old School Enrichment Center, 1 School Street, Wilmington, VT 05363.
