James Angus

WILMINGTON - James Patrick Angus, resident of Wilmington and former longtime resident of Garden City, NY, died on Saturday, March 12, with his beloved partner Karen Hughes and loving family at his side. James was a miracle of life who defied all the odds and brought love and humor to all he met.
James was born in Rockville Centre, NY, on July 30, 1962, with transposition of the great arteries at a time when there were few, if any, solutions to this life-threatening congenital heart defect. He underwent a series of operations during his lifetime and helped pioneer the medical understanding of how to treat heart defects. His fierce determination to overcome any obstacle was greatly admired by all who knew him.
Even though his life expectancy was always uncertain, James prevailed and lived a miraculous life full of family, friendship, fishing, and all sorts of other activities. He grew up following his brothers down the ski slopes of southern Vermont, where he made his home for much of his adult life. He was happiest when surrounded by friends and family and always lit up the room with his big smile, twinkling eyes, and infectious laughter. He loved hosting “man’s weekends” and concocting all sorts of adventures
with his close friends. He especially enjoyed traveling, adventures, and exploring diners, drive-ins, and dives with the love of his life, Karen. Jamie’s heart was literally and figuratively larger than normal and it always shined brightly. He was an inspiration to all and will be missed terribly.
James graduated from Garden City High School, Nassau Community College, and CW Post College. He worked in media and communications, along with hospitality and marketing. He was instrumental in the founding of the Adult Congenital Heart Association, a supporter of Ducks Unlimited, and active in the lifeblood of his Vermont and Long Island communities.
James was preceded in death by his parents Patricia and John W. Angus Jr.; and his brother John W. Angus, III. In addition to his partner Karen Hughes, he is survived by sister-in-law Debora Angus; brothers Jeffrey G. Angus (Margaret) and Peter F. Angus (Alyson); sister Patricia M. Angus; nieces Kristin Westmoreland (Travis), Kimberly Reilly (Michael), Kathleen Angus, Jennifer Garson (Brett), and Katherine Downes-Angus (Morgan McInvaille); and nephews John P. Angus (Elizabeth), Andrew G. Angus, John W. Angus, and P. Alexander Angus; along with loving great-nephews and a great-niece.
