Houghton Sawyer
WHITINGHAM- Houghton (Pete) N. Sawyer Jr., 92, a resident of Plumb Road, died on Monday, June 19, at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, MA.
Pete was born in Whitingham on June 10, 1931, the son of the late Sarah Graham Sawyer and Houghton N. Sawyer Sr. He attended Whitingham schools, graduating from Whitingham High School and then enlisting in the US Army. Pete worked as a master electrician for many years in area businesses and schools. He later co-owned and operated Sawyer-Bentwood in Whitingham from where he retired.
Pete lived a simple life. He enjoyed his camp (Pecos), his home, and his family. He is survived by his wife Alzada Murdock Sawyer, of Whitingham; stepchildren Rebecca (Roberts) Goodson, of South Carolina; Linda Roberts (Bob), of New York; and Ricky Phelps, of Massachusetts; his sister Margaret; and nine grandchildren. He was preceded in death by step children John Roberts Jr. and Danny Phelps.
Graveside funeral services for Pete will be held Friday, July 7, at 11 am in Sadawga Cemetery in Whitingham. There are no visiting hours. Memorial gifts may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project or Friends of Renal Dialysis, c/o Covey Allen & Shea Funeral Home, PO Box 215 Wilmington, VT 05363.
