Helen (Ray) Young

WILMINGTON- Helen (Ray) Young, 97,  of Pompano Beach, FL, died Saturday, May 12, peacefully surrounded by family, friends, loving personal caregivers, and wonderful home hospice staff, at her son’s home in Wilmington.
Born in Castleton, NY, the firstborn daughter of John Ray and Helena Mutterer Ray, she attended Castleton High School where she graduated with honors and as valedictorian of her class in 1938. She then attended the College of Saint Rose, in Albany, NY, graduating cum laude in 1942 and awarded membership in Kappa Gamma Pi, a national scholastic honor society. Mrs. Young taught high school English, French, and Latin briefly after college and then married Thomas H. Young, of East Greenbush, NY, and raised three children there.
Mrs. Young was predeceased by her brother John Ray, and her sister Betty Wainman Wheeler; her husband Thomas, and their son Brian. She is survived by her sons Thomas and James Mark Young; daughter-in-law Mary Young; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Both before and after she retired with her husband to Florida, Mrs. Young enjoyed playing golf and bridge with her many friends. Mrs. Young was genuinely interested in people and is remembered for her curiosity, thoughtfulness, grace, and charm. She kept up with current events, including national politics and world affairs.
Once described by a local sports reporter as the “poised and beautiful Helen Young,” she was indeed that until the end. No public memorial services are planned.
