Dan Smyers

ANDOVER, MA - Dan Smyers died of a heart attack on Monday, February 7. He was born to Dan and Trudie Reno Smyers in 1946 in Pittsburgh, PA.
Dan was the husband of Kathleen Walsh Smyers, the father of Scott Daniel (Jennifer McHugh) Smyers, of Acton and Bethany Smyers (Thomas) Innis, of Belmont. He leaves behind, but will always inspire, four grandchildren: Jonathan Daniel and Rachel Ilse Smyers, Trudie Charlotte and Mae Helen Innis.
Dan was a graduate of Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Michigan. He was a longtime resident of Boxborough before moving to Edgewood in North Andover. He was also a part time resident of Wilmington, VT. Dan was an employee of Copperweld and Air Products. After Air Products, he started Terra Hardwoods Inc., importing bamboo flooring with his business partner and friend Don Street, of British Columbia, Canada.
Dan was an enthusiastic hiker, mountaineer, cyclist, skier, photographer, and musician. He guided many family hiking trips but also led outings for the Boy Scouts - Troop 76 Acton and Troop 1 Boxborough - with his son Scott and his friends. Later he climbed many peaks in the Alps and even guided in Switzerland in his semi-retirement.
He kept people safe through over 50 years of ski patrol in five states - Pennsylvania, Michigan, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, and Vermont - most recently at Nashoba Valley and Mount Snow, VT.  Skiing and outdoor emergency first aid was a huge part of his life and he provided training to countless ski patrollers. Dan reconnected with his love of the piano in his later years, taking formal lessons and encouraged others to appreciate and enjoy music.
He will be remembered for his steadfast and dependable presence in so many lives; for his technology, handyman, and woodworking skills; as well as his bearlike hugs and deep, belly laughs.
A celebration of life service will be held on Saturday, May 14, at 1:30 pm at South Church, UCC, 41 Central Street, Andover, MA 01810.
In lieu of flowers consider a donation to the Shriners Children’s Hospital (Boston), Indian Hill Music or Miles of Smiles, Beth’s charity for animals.
