Caroline Allen
BENNINGTON- Caroline Allen, 84, died Monday, December 23, at the Bennington Health and Rehabilitation Center.
Born in Readsboro on July 11, 1935, Mrs. Allen was the daughter of Lawrence and Jessie (Flanders) Smith. She grew up in Whitingham, attending and graduating from the local schools. On May 1, 1955, she married Richard Allen and together they raised their family on the Allen Pleasant Valley Farm Homestead in Jacksonville.
Mrs. Allen worked as a secretary at the Holstein Friesian Association in Brattleboro, and various other jobs before becoming a stay at home mom and homemaker. She, along with her husband “Bummy,” loved attending her children’s (and later grandchildren’s) sporting events and school activities. It was rare they missed any of these events over the years. Early in their married life they loved attending square dances and music festivals.
Mrs. Allen and her husband loved to travel, visiting much of the country, sharing stories of their adventures with family and friends. Her favorite trips were to the Wells Beach, ME, area. They would enjoy the beaches, shops, and restaurants. Her other favorite pastimes were attending fiddler contests, plays at the Ogunquit Playhouse, and visiting lighthouses along the Maine coastline. She also loved meeting friends at the local churches, her favorites being in Dover and Halifax Center.
Survivors include two sons, Keith and his wife Jenni, of Norman, OK, and Scott and his wife Jayne, of Wilmington; and her daughter Christine and her husband Jeffery Block, of Jacksonville. She had five grandchildren, Kasi, Derek (Cosette), Amanda, Travis, and Jack, and three great-granddaughters, Lailee, Ember, and Payton.
She was preceded in death by her husband Richard in October 2012.
Services are private at the request of Mrs. Allen and family. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be sent to Whitingham Fire and Rescue or to the organization of one’s choice.
