Bertha Akley

WILMINGTON - Bertha Frances Akley, also known as Jimmy, 95, formerly of Readsboro, died Friday June 3, at Pine Heights in Brattleboro.
Bertha was born in Marlboro on February 8, 1927, the daughter of the late Bertram F. Akley and Marion H. Pool. Bertha graduated from eighth grade in a one-room schoolhouse called Winchester School on Higley Hill Road in Marlboro, on May 29, 1942, then from Wilmington High School in June 1946.
Bertha worked at Halifax Electric Company in Brattleboro for six years, Holden and Martin Lumber Company in Brattleboro for six years, and Dewitt Beverage in Brattleboro for over 20 years.
She cared for her mother until she went into a nursing home and then babysat and cared for the children of Tom and Candy Simon and Tim and Kathy Whitney. She enjoyed attending Jacksonville senior meals, genealogy, being in the woods, watching animals, walking, crocheting, knitting sweaters, and poetry.
Bertha is survived by many nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her four siblings Mary Brown, Mildred Akley, Ruth Davis, and Grace Crowningshield.
