State wins default judgment motion for club’s unpaid sales taxes

NEWFANE- Windham Superior Court Judge Robert P. Gerety has granted a motion by the Vermont Department of Taxes for default judgment in their case against Hermitage owner James Barnes.
The judgment awards the Vermont Department of Taxes a total of $1,081,151.42 in unpaid meals, rooms, alcohol, and retail sales taxes the Hermitage failed to pay in 2016, 2017, and 2018, as well as interest and penalties.   The court also ordered interest to continue to accrue on the amount until it is paid.
