Playing whack-a-mole with certain mistruths

It looks like nowadays it’s necessary to play endless whack-a-mole with certain kinds of mistruths. Two examples appeared in last week’s letters to the editor. It’s tiring to respond to each instance, and I’m not the best person to do it, but just in case others are understandably too weary of this nonsense to respond, I’ll give it a shot.
