Clean heating oil is the law

To the Editor,
Clean Heat has been switched on this winter since Vermont is now using only ultra-low-sulfur heating oil.  Why the switch?  Clean heating oil is the law. According to 10 V.S.A. § 585, all heating oil sold in Vermont must have a sulfur content of less than 15 parts-per-million.
This matters because ultra low sulfur heating oil significantly reduces particulate emissions. Compared to regular heating oil, ULSHO cuts 99% of sulfur dioxide emissions, 97% of airborne emissions, and 30% of NOx emissions.
