Music festival offers free admission to the public

Musicians rehearse for a performance at Marlboro.

MARLBORO - Marlboro Music’s second festival weekend will offer a veritable bounty of music making, including a full slate of open rehearsals in the concert hall - free for all to enjoy - and weekend programs featuring a marvelous variety of chamber works performed by over 25 master artists and new musical leaders.
Co-artistic director Mitsuko Uchida will play Beethoven with two wonderfully talented young string players: violinist Stephanie Zyzak and cellist Oliver Herbert. A pair of 20th century works will spotlight outstanding woodwind artists, including clarinetist Charles Neidich of the New York Woodwind Quintet; Seattle Symphony principal oboe Mary Lynch; as well as gifted young musicians Mitchell Kuhn, oboe; and Jacob Thonis, bassoon. String quartets by Mozart and Brahms, with senior artists Lucy Chapman and Daniel Phillips in the second violin chairs, promise to stir the soul. Lastly, the vocal program will demonstrate its unique artistry with mezzo-sopranos Rebecca Printz and Marie Engle, ranging from a Bach cantata to Hindemith’s dark-hued “Des Todes Tod.”
The weekend concerts, which run through Sunday, August 15, are sold out throughout the summer, though the box office is maintaining waiting lists.
To keep communities, audiences, and Vermont neighbors as safe as possible, only about 175 tickets will be sold per concert - the capacity of the hall is 625. Masks are required inside the building, and it is asked that audience members attend Marlboro events only if they are fully vaccinated. Musicians and staff members have been vaccinated and are receiving regular COVID-19 tests.
So that more can experience the music, free open rehearsals will be held in Persons Auditorium during the day, from mid-July to mid-August. Rehearsal schedules are announced at the beginning of each week and include many of the works that will be performed on the following weekend’s concert programs. Admission is free, and no tickets or advance signup is required. Schedules can be viewed on the website: marlboromusic.org. Audience members may also contact the reception desk at reception@marlboromusic.org or (802) 254-2394. Note that rehearsal schedules are subject to change.
