Spotlight turns on magic realism
BRATTLEBORO - Latchis Arts’ Spotlight series puts its focus in September on magic realism.
A genre that combines realistic narrative with surreal elements of dream or fantasy, magic realism is a trending style that includes the Academy Award winners for best picture in 2015, “Birdman,” and 2018, “The Shape of Water.”
On September 16, Spotlight focuses on “Birdman,” the 2015 best picture winner, starring Michael Keaton, Zack Galifianakis, and Ed Norton. It is rated R. It continues on September 23 with “The Secret of Roan Inish,” a hopeful, family-friendly Irish fairy tale. It is rated PG. The series concludes on September 30 with “Daughters of the Dust,” a film set in the Gullah community of coastal South Carolina at the dawn of the 20th century.
