An Old Home Week article on Wilmington’s history focused on Old Home Week 1910 and an impromptu exhibition of Joan Newton Cuneo’s racing skills. Cuneo raced her 90-hp Knox Giant roadster down the town’s gravel Main Street at 72 miles per hour, to the delight of the crowd that lined the road. Cuneo was a well-known race car driver of the early racing era, competing with male drivers around the country – and winning. She had a lifelong connection to Wilmington, and owned a camp on Lake Raponda.
