State health officials were warning of widespread cases of H1N1, “swine flu.” With delivery of the season’s flu vaccine delayed, some schools in surrounding areas were already seeing 20% to 25% of their students out with symptoms, and in some cases an even higher percentage of staff. The outbreak hadn’t hit Deerfield Valley schools yet, but they were ready with a plan that included closing a school if the number of students affected by the flu reached 30% of the school’s population.
