The Vermont Department of Education recommended cutting state aid to small schools to encourage consolidation. According to a report submitted to the Legislature by the department, the action would save $5.3 million and encourage small school districts, many of which they said were “in close proximity to each other,” to consolidate. The report claimed “It is highly likely significant financial savings could be realized if the schools (in close proximity to each other) were to combine.”
