Floodplain restoration design work finished

DOVER - The Windham County Conservation District recently completed preliminary design work on a floodplain restoration project on the Ellis Brook in Dover and Wilmington. Windham NRCD worked with Bear Creek Environmental LLC, the North Branch Fire District, and local landowners to move this project forward. The successful implementation of these designs will have benefits to both wildlife and downstream communities.
Implementation will include the planting of vegetation to reduce excess warming of the river by sunlight and improve water quality through filtration of runoff. Other project components will include the removal of berms that are blocking the stream from accessing its floodplains, which will reduce the threat of flooding downstream. The next step in this project will be the completion of final engineering designs for this work.
This project was funded by the Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation Clean Water Initiative program through grant funding administered by the Mount Ascutney Regional Commission.
