Blending folk, rock, and pop

PUTNEY- Next Stage Arts Project and Twilight Music present an evening with contemporary folk singer, songwriter, guitarist, and pianist Jonatha Brooke at Next Stage on Sunday, March 22 at 7:30 pm.  Blending elements of folk, rock and pop, her music features complex harmonies and poignant lyrics.
Brooks began writing songs, recording, and touring in the 1980s with Jennifer Kimball while both were students at Amherst College in western Massachusetts. Originally called Jonatha and Jennifer, the duo changed their name to The Story, and released two CDs, “Grace in Gravity” and “Angel in the House,” in the early 1990s.
As a solo artist since 1994, Brooks has released another dozen albums, ranging from the companion CD to her critically acclaimed, one woman, Off-Broadway show “My Mother Has Four Noses” to “The Works,” an album of songs with lyrics written by Woody Guthrie and music composed by Brooks.  She’s co-written songs with The Courtyard Hounds and Katy Perry, written for four Disney films and numerous television shows, and she composed and performed the theme song for Joss Whedon’s “Dollhouse.”  She has also written four musicals, as well as “My Mother Has Four Noses,” her play about her relationship with her mother, who suffered from dementia.
Next Stage is located at 15 Kimball Hill.  Tickets are $25 in advance or $28 at the door.  Next Stage will provide a beer and wine cash bar.
Advance tickets are available at www.nextstagearts.org.  For more information call (802) 387-0102.
