Weekend focused directly on women

WILMINGTON- Wilmington Works presents a weekend for women. Highlighted by a great female vocalist performing at Memorial Hall on Saturday October 20, organizers have planned a whole weekend of events for women to enjoy together. Call some friends, make a plan, pick one event or several. Come for an hour, an afternoon, or stay all weekend. Events are free and open to the public except where noted.
On Saturday, October 20, Norton House Quilting, 30 West Main Street, hosts a needlecraft event. Come in anytime between 1 and 2:30 pm, and see why take-along small needlecraft is trending. Shop owner Emily Hammer will demonstrate some stitches and help get everything needed to kick off a first project with ease and confidence.
Zoar Outdoor Adventure Center, 36 West Main Street, offers a Mountain Bike Clinic from 1 to 4 pm. Open to all levels, but especially perfect for those new to venturing off-road, or for those who are curious to learn where to ride off-road. Registration required:  $70 includes bike rental, $30 for those who bring their own bike.
Bartleby’s Books, 17 West Main Street  hosts author Robin MacArthur at 3 pm.  MacArthur will read from and discuss her recent book, “Heart Spring Mountains.” Set in southern Vermont, this award-winning novel tells of three generations of Vermont women.  
Wine and spirits will be available to taste at the Red Fox Shop and Ratu’s. Round out the afternoon and enjoy a visit to some of downtown’s fabulous independent shops.
Andrea at Pickwell’s, 22B West Main Street, will offer special treats to shoppers over this weekend. Also visit Jasper Decor, The Incurable Romantic, Quaigh Design, The Fashion Plate, Rock River Restoration, West End Books, Jim McGrath Gallery,  Far Beyond Woodworking, Hayseed Gifts, and Chapman’s In-town Antiques.
Friends of Memorial Hall present Carla Cooke in concert on Saturday, October 20, with doors opening at 7:30 pm. Tickets available via www.historicmemorialhall.com.
Cooke is the youngest daughter of the legendary Sam Cooke. She connects with her roots through her father’s music. Currently on tour with the “Ultimate Sam Cooke Experience Tribute” with her band Agape Nation,  she will be performing unforgettable hit songs of her father and sharing intimate stories about her father’s life and music.
 On Sunday, meet in the courtyard in front of the 1836 Country Store at 11 am for a guided walking tour of the downtown historic district with the Historical Society’s Julie Moore. The tour is also available as a self-guided walk any time. Maps are available at the chamber of commerce.
