Students protect wildlife
DOVER- As part of an International Baccalaureate unit of study at Dover School, a group of sixth-graders decided to address the problem of pollution and wildlife in the Deerfield Valley community.
Breck Bensin, Addy Redden, and Skye Twining focused on the problem facing a special loon who once lived at Lake Raponda. He was nicknamed “Fishline” as he became entangled in fishing lines, perhaps left behind by someone fishing on the lake.
The students worked with Wilmington photographer Nicki Steel to study the plight of Fishline. They contacted Eric Hanson, a state loon expert, and Jack Widness, who helped the students with their project.
After much research they found they could build a receptacle where people could place used fishing lines. They built two of these receptacles and received permission from the town of Wilmington to mount them at Lake Raponda.
