WILMINGTON- The Whitingham-Halifax Lions Club celebrated new and veteran members at the club’s annual installation ceremonies held June 17 at Memorial Hall.
Club leaders for 2019-2020 were sworn in by Lion Steve Betit, of Whitingham.  New members were inducted under the direction of Lions Past District Governor Joe Wilson, of Springfield.
Many Lions were recognized for their service and for recruiting new members. Betit was given a chevron pin recognizing his 35 years of service to the club, many as past president.  Three members were singled out for outstanding commitment to the club and community.  Earning the President’s Appreciation Award was Alison Ferris, of Dover.  Wanda Walkowiak received recognition as Outstanding Lion, particularly for her work as membership director.  And Jeanette Felton was honored as Lion of the Year.
The club, which has recently expanded to serve the Deerfield Valley, grew by another 12 members this year, after doubling its membership in 2018, making it the fastest growing service club in Vermont.
Lions are known for their many charitable and community contributions, addressing food insecurity on a number of levels, vision programs (including testing children’s eyesight), bringing the community together through awareness campaigns, and promoting peace.  Plans for 2019-2020 include addressing environmental issues.
Lions is the largest volunteer service organization worldwide, and each Lion positively affects more than 70 people in the communities they serve.
