Fraud alert warns of scam customs, border officer calls

The Vermont Treasurer’s office reports that several Vermonters have received unsolicited calls from individuals claiming to be US Customs and Border Protection officers.
The callers asked for personally identifiable information, such as date of birth and address, and financial account information.
The callers then state that the “Vermont Treasury Department” would be calling and to pick up calls from only one number: (802) 828-2301. While that is the main number for the treasurer’s office, they do not ever call members of the public from that number to request financial information.
These scam attempts are “spoofing” the phone number to give false legitimacy to these fraud attempts.
If you receive an unsolicited call from anyone purporting to be from the treasurer’s office, ask for the caller’s name and a call-back number. Never give out personal information, and hang up if the caller seems suspicious; then call (802) 828-2301.
