An explosion of color at the museum all summer

Emily Mason’s painting “Venezia,” created in 1958.

BENNINGTON- The Works on Paper Gallery at the museum has exploded with color. Small in size, yet vast in scale and power is what awaits in “Color | Gesture: Early Works by Emily Mason” on view through September 8 at Bennington Museum.
Mason is one of the great abstract painters.  For more than 60 years she has been creating lyrical paintings on canvas and paper where strong gestural marks contrast with washes of color and spontaneous splashes and drips.  Mason attended Bennington College from 1950 to 1952 before immersing herself in the vibrant art scene of 1950s New York City. “Color|Gesture: Early Works by Emily Mason” traces the development of the artist’s distinctive style of abstraction through paintings on paper created in the 1950s and 1960s.
Featured are 32 phenomenal works spanning a decade of great evolution for Mason. The works in this exhibition show Mason developing her own unique style, translating the gesture and movement of abstract expressionism into an abstraction of pure color laid down in delicate veils and washes.
Bennington Museum is located at 75 Main Street (Route 9) and is open 10 am to 5 pm daily June through October (closed July 4).  The museum is wheelchair accessible.
