BENNINGTON- The Bennington County Choral Society, directed by Edwin Lawrence, welcomes new and returning singers to rehearsals for its annual spring concert. Weekly Monday evening rehearsals begin at the Second Congregational Church on Monday, February 3, at 6:45 pm. The chorus is open to singers of all abilities, ages 15 and older.

The spring concert, “Masses From Two Worlds,” marks the BCCS’ final concert with longtime director Lawrence. The program consists principally of “Misa Criolla” (“Creole Mass”), by Argentinian pianist and composer Ariel Ramirez, and Austrian composer Franz Schubert’s “Mass No. 2” (commonly known as “Schubert’s Mass in G”) — both of which are based on folkloric musical themes.

Ramirez was a scholar of traditional South American folk music who said his inspiration for a spiritual piece was rooted in an encounter with a group of nuns during a post-World War II visit to Germany. His “Misa Criolla,” first conducted and recorded in 1965, brought Ramirez widespread fame and was one of the first masses composed in a modern language (Spanish) after the Second Vatican Council granted permission to celebrate mass.

The BCCS spring concert program will also include other music in the folk traditions of Latin America and 19th-century Germany. For more information visit bccsmusic.wordpress.com.
