A native Vermonter from the Stowe area, Tobin is most known for his ability to capture the beauty of the moment of the light in the blue mountains of his area, or the brilliance of shadows on the snow in Vermont farmland. This is partially attributed to the fact that he does all of his work outdoors regardless of the time of the year or rapidly changing weather.
Unlike some oil painters, Tobin learned his technique and style by standing at the side of noted landscape artist Thomas Curtin when he was a young boy, and received his first paint set from him when he was 12. He went on to train under other well-known New England painters such as Charles Movalli and Fred Hines, until he established himself as an award-winning artist in oils and landscapes.
