BRATTLEBORO- On Sunday, March 25, at 3 pm, the Windham Orchestra, directed by Hugh Keelan, will present “Our Community” at the Latchis Theater.

At first glance, the program includes three pieces, Concerto for Piano and Orchestra No. 1 by Sergei Prokofiev, “Music for Windham,” by Jacob Mashak, and Symphony No.3, “Organ Symphony,” by Camille Saint-Saens.

But there is so much more to the story, and that is where “Our Community” comes in. Featured in Prokofiev’s Piano Concert No. 1 is 17-year-old Dorian Elgers-Lo, winner of the orchestra’s 2012 Youth Concerto Competition. Sponsored by Douglas Cox, Brattleboro violinmaker, the concerto competition is designed to showcase the talent of the area’s musically gifted youth.

Elgers-Lo is a senior at Amherst Regional High School. He has been playing piano for 10 years, and has won several regional and state piano competitions. Elgers-Lo has also been playing violin for eight years and currently leads his high school honors orchestra as its concertmaster. As a National Merit Scholarship finalist, Elgers-Lo hopes to continue his musical studies in college, while majoring in biomedical engineering.

“Music for Windham” was written by Mashak, a composer, Putney resident, and trombone player in the Windham Orchestra. The performance of this piece is a true community effort, incorporating the full orchestra; percussion students from Dummerston School; members of the First Baptist Church and its communities including, visitors to the shelter and the Estey organ played by James Wallace; Garry Jones and Erik Newquist’s Harmonious Forge musical park benches, and the entire audience.

In addition to the Estey organ featured in this concert, the First Baptist Church is home to Brattleboro’s Overflow Homeless Shelter. The orchestra invites others to join in supporting the shelter, which warms and feeds the homeless in the community each winter.
