The slogan for Wilmington’s Old Home Week held in August was “Meet a Neighbor, See a Friend, Celebrate Our Town.” That sure summed up the wonderful celebration. The fantastic weather, the village full of flowers, balloons and smiling faces, and the tremendous help by so many people and businesses all contributed to making it a success.
The importance of Old Home Week is best summed up with a few facts. The oldest participant was over 96 ½ years old. The youngest was just 12 days old. The Boyd Family had over 250 members attending, 169 in the parade, and the person who came the farthest was an alumna who traveled from the Galapagos Islands.
The core committee spent almost two years in the planning but did not do it alone. Whether it was organizing, donating time, goods or services, or simply joining in the fun, people and businesses really plunged in to make it truly the party of the decade.
In a time when people seem scattered and it’s hard to take time to celebrate all that is good about growing up and living in a small town, Wilmington’s Old Home Week was a wonderful example of people coming together to carry on a tradition that started in 1890.
Thank you to all who gave so generously.
