WEST YARMOUTH, MA- Roland Arthur Dupuis, 85, of 21 Johnson Lane, and formerly of North Adams, died Wednesday, August 4, at the home of Mary and Margaret Havreluk, his caregivers, in Readsboro, VT.

He was born in North Adams on August 13, 1924 a son of Raoul and Cora (Lussier) Dupuis. He attended local schools and also graduated from Security Systems School, in Long Island, NY, and from Stereo System and Installing School, Albany, NY. Later in life he attended Wentworth Institute and obtained his real estate agent license. He was employed for 19 years at Molly’s Bakery, in North Adams, as a pastry baker.

His employment at Molly’s was interrupted by his service in the US Navy during WWII. He was a highly decorated veteran serving as a seaman second class. He was awarded the Purple Heart and the Navy and Marine Corp Medal for saving the lives of two fellow sailors. He was involved in the invasion on D-Day at Omaha Beach on the USS Forrest destroyer. He was wounded in Okinawa and received the Purple Heart. After his military career he returned to North Adams.

Mr. Dupuis established the Berkshire Audio Stereo and Security Store on Union Street in North Adams, and his well-known building and construction company, which served many businesses and residents in several states.

Mr. Dupuis was in charge of all the finishing work at the former Sheraton Hotel in North Adams. He moved to Cape Cod in 1978 where he continued his construction business, working for residents on the Cape and doing work for Old Colony Bank and later the Bank of Boston. He also was a licensed real-estate agent on the Cape. He was a member of the North Adams Lions Club where he served as president for three years. He was a member of the Building Trade Association. He was a communicant of St. Francis of Assisi Church in North Adams, attended Mass at St. Joachim’s Church in Readsboro, and at Catholic churches on the Cape.

His former wife Helen (Attalla) Dupuis, whom he married August 11, 1945 in St. Francis Church, North Adams, died December 13, 1996. Survivors include two sisters, Murielle Ouellette and her husband Homer, of Pittsfield, and Claire Burbank and her husband Alfred, of Pittsfield; brother, Norman Dupuis and his companion Jane Kronzer, of Poway, CA; granddaughter, Brittany Sherwood and her husband Jeffrey, of Yorktown,VA; two great-grandchildren, Connor and Peyton Reed, of Yorktown; sisters-in-law Judy and Jeannette Dupuis, of Pittsfield; several nieces and nephews; caregivers Mary and Margaret Haverluk, of Readsboro; and his “adopted” family, Carrol and Reita Havreluk, of Jacksonville, VT, Gabrielle Havreluk of St. Albans, VT, and William and Jeanne( Havreluk) Bourdon, of Lee.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Rosemarie Wool Good­rich who died August 9, 1988; a great-granddaughter, Rose Reed; and three brothers, Raoul, Wilfred, and Charles Dupuis.

Funeral services were held on Monday in North Adams. In lieu of flowers memorial donations are suggested for the charity of the donor’s choice through the funeral home, Flynn & Dagnoli-Montagna Home for Funerals.

I pray for my good friends Mary and Peggy Haverluk.. not only have I been very close neighbors with them, I remember running down the road trying to catch roland as he had gotten out and was lost.. I walk him back home as he was telling me stories of everything he has worked for and Peggy, Mary's sister greeted me at the door as we got Roland in his comfortable chair with his safe blanket!

He will be missed!! I pray for him that he is now in god hands, I also pray for mary and peggy!! Roland is in a better place now..
