WILMINGTON- The Southern Vermont Players, under the direction of Bob DuCharme, announce the production of the Mary Chase comedy “Harvey,” her Pulitzer Prize-winning play. It will be presented at Memorial Hall Center for the Arts, on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday over two weekends, July 29, 30, and 31 and August 5, 6, and 7. There is an 8 pm curtain.

The story is about Elwood P. Dowd, played by Dan Facilla, and his presumably imaginary friend, Harvey, a six-foot, three-and-one-half-inch tall rabbit, unseen to all but Elwood.

When Elwood starts to introduce Harvey to guests at a social gathering, his society-obsessed sister, Veta Louise Simmons (Marci Himelson) has seen as much of his eccentric behavior as she can tolerate. She decides to have Elwood committed to Chumley’s Rest sanitarium to spare her daughter Myrtle Mae (Patti Burke) and their family from future embarrassment.

The cast also includes Mrs. Ethel Chauvenet (Susie Haughwout), whose father was a scout with Buffalo Bill, and the staff at Chumley’s Rest sanitarium: Dr. William Chumley (Alan Greenspan), Dr. Lyman Sanderson (Lester Matathias), Nurse Ruth Kelly (Taryn Lawrence), and Duane Wilson (Frank Squindo). Other parts include Judge Omar Gaffney (Joe Arnold), Betty Chumley (Linda Hughes), and E.J. Lofgren, a cab driver (Marley Stevens).

The box office number is (802) 464-8411. Reserved seating, prices range from $12 to $15. There are special prices for seniors and students. Please ask about the complimentary seat program for Vermont students of high school age and younger. These seats are subject to restrictions and should be reserved in advance. Memorial Hall Center for the Arts is located at 14 West Main Street.
