To the Editor:

A few months ago the officers and trustees of the Dover Historical Society wrote to alert the Deerfield Valley community of the upcoming Dover Bicentennial and some of the activities that will take place.

This is an update so all will know what the officers and trustees are doing. First and foremost we are digging out (inside and outside) so that we can put our best face on for the celebration. We are also keeping the Harris House open on weekends during the summer at the regular time (noon to 4 pm on Saturdays) beginning in May.

In anticipation for the celebration we would ask anyone who may have artifacts that could be on display especially for this year, to contact an officer or trustee. These items could be on loan and would be returned whenever designated if you would like to retain ownership.

Some of the things that would be a nice addition to the displays at Harris House would be: any local memorabilia for the military room – uniforms, photos, medals, letters, diaries, military equipment, etc. For the kitchen – any vintage kitchen implements, hooked or braided rugs, and for the school room – books, local early blackboards or writing slates, school flag, etc.

One of the highlights of the bicentennial celebration will be the dedication of two memorial plaques honoring the men who served in the wars after World War II so we would especially like to have the Military Room reflect our appreciation of our servicemen.

Please join us in preparing for the celebration. We need many pairs of hands to make this happen. We need you. We have several workbees planned and you could have your choice of inside or outside projects. Let us hear from you.

Officers and trustees of the Dover Historical Society are: Eva Sherman, President, (802) 348-7774; Royal Wilson, Vice President, (802) 464-3145; Patti Buck, Secretary, (802) 348-6849; Edie Mas, Treasurer, (802) 464-0916.

Eva Sherman, on behalf of the DHS
