WILMINGTON- The pergola in the town's award-winning downtown Bank Park will stay put after all. An Australian ballot question seeking the removal of the controversial structure was defeated 397 to 248 Tuesday.

In a non-binding poll asking voters if they would prefer to renovate the current high school or seek further consolidation with Whitingham, Wilmington voters chose renovation, 230 to 134, or 63% to 37%. In Whitingham, the vote was reversed, with 60 percent of voters choosing consolidation, while 40% prefered to renovate the Twin Valley High School facility in Wilmington. Board members plan to chart a way forward at a future meeting.

Dear Dog who ate the homework,

You're slander of another townsperson from behind the safety of the internet is so admirable, you coward. Get over yourself and the despicable charade that Skip, Laraine, and Kelly have commandeered. Get a REAL cause.

So, the effort to get the pergola removed has failed. Was has not failed is the effort to get a message to Joseph C______a and others who seek to pull the wool over Wilmington's eyes: You do not have the authority to act with total disregard for town restrictions. In addition, you showed a conflict of interest, serving on a zoning board and taking on the creation and construction of this project. You may consider yourself an artiste on a different plane but you need to follow directions like anybody else. And, people understand these pergola" architectural awards" for what they are. Nobody is fooled.
