To the Editor:

Stop the silliness, keep the pergola!

The village of Wilmington is a beautiful place. Each time I come for a visit I feel like it is home. The new pergola structure at the Bank Park adds to the beauty of the town center and should be saved.

I hear the town may vote on an article at Town Meeting to have it taken down.

What a shame that would be. Its design and workmanship are like pieces of art and will be admired by generations to come.

As a second-home owner in Wilmington I do not have a vote on the pergola issue. I would urge all who do to speak up and keep the area intact. No one should offer a dime to help in its removal. I can think of far more pressing issues that hard-working folks’ donations could be used for instead.

If the pergola is removed what will go up in its place? Who will have to pay for the new structure? What if the rest of the town does not like the new design will we see another petition to have that removed, too?

End this silliness now! Vote “no” on this Town Meeting ballot and let the Pergola and its beauty live on.
