The Winter X Games were hailed as a success, with Mount Snow reporting as many as 83,000 spectators over the course of the weekend. The MOOver carried 11,095 passengers on Saturday alone, and more than 20,200 for the entire weekend. By 10 am on Saturday, Mount Snow’s parking lots were filled to capacity, and the resort was so crowded some people weren’t able to make it to the games. Some local property owners cleared their lawns and fields and provided additional parking – for a price.
20 years ago:
The Vermont Agency of Transportation was studying the intersection of Route 9 and Route 100 in Wilmington village, to determine the amount of roadway needed to create an additional lane that would help alleviate traffic backup during peak periods. According to a VAOT traffic safety engineer, it was found that there was nowhere near enough road width for an additional lane for turning traffic.
Dover police gave chase to a 19-year-old Connecticut resident who had stolen a sweatshirt from Grampy’s. Employees apprehended the thief and called police, but when officers arrived, the man bolted out of the store and fled in his car. Dover police followed the man to the junction of routes 9 and 100 south before breaking off the chase. Moments later, the driver was involved in an accident on Hogback, and was subsequently arrested by Vermont State Police.
30 years ago:
Film crews at the Hermitage shooting winter scenes for the movie “A Change of Seasons,” starring Shirley MacLaine, Bo Derek, and Anthony Hopkins, were confounded by a lack of snow in the valley. Snow that had been laid down on the inn’s front lawn overnight blew away in strong winds. Snowmakers from Mount Snow scrambled to cover bare spots before shooting began. The lack of snow forced producers to shoot a number of the slopeside scenes in Colorado.
The Wilmington budget committee recommended that voters allocate no public funds to move the 20-pound Parrot Cannon from the firehouse to the town hill common. The committee also recommended that voters spend no money on final plans and specifications for alterations, improvements or additions at Wilmington High School.
Senator James Jeffords said there was good news and bad news from Washington. The good news, he said, was that initiatives to cut waste and rein in federal spending were gaining support. The bad news was that health and energy security continued to decline.
Local folk rock group The Cooper Dodge Band was under contract to release a single with Atco Records. The group, which included Don Cooper and John Dodge, had been playing in the Mount Snow area since 1975. The A-side was called “I Want You Back in My Life,” and the flip-side was “You Do Me Badly.”
40 years ago:
Speaking at Mount Snow, Governor Deane C. Davis called for orderly development and growth. Davis said the environment had been abused for “umpteen” years, and that the state’s rivers and streams were polluted. But help was on the way, he said, in the form of environmental legislation that was working its way through the Legislature. The legislation became Act 250.
Birds were flocking to Mount Snow, where several of the mountain’s lift operators had set up feeding stations that attracted the feathered visitors. According to veteran lift operators, they could tell when it was going to snow by the increase in activity at the feeders.
The first gondola cabin on Mount Snow’s new “skis-on” gondola was placed on the cable. The gondola was expected to be ready for passengers within two weeks.
