Consider expense of removal

To the Editor:

To say I am exhausted hearing the complaints about a beautiful outdoor space is an understatement. The democratic process is exhausted. The majority of the town spoke during a vote at Town Meeting in March 2009: Keep the pergola; proceed with the park.

What many of us are not considering is the exorbitant cost this “fight” has brought to the town. Thousands have been spent on lawyers. Countless hours have been spent taking town personnel time. What about the cost associated with creating and instituting an Australian ballot? How much more money are we going to spend?

Has anyone considered the engineering and legal costs of having the pergola moved? Sure the “Move the Pergola” Committee has agreed to pay the cost of moving it to another location, but what about the structural and legal ramifications of this move? Is the “Move the Pergola” Committee going to pay for this as well?

In these tough economic times, our town just does not have the money to “fix something that isn’t broken!” I recommend all not wanting to keep frivolously spending our tax dollars come to the special Town Meeting at 7 pm on Tuesday, November 10, in the TVHS gym. Ask about the costs associated with this argument. See if you want it to go any further … I know I don’t. Let’s move on!

Respectfully,

Christine Colella

I dunno. I was in town last spring. I think it's a great structure to hang laundry to dry.

Folks- come on now - we all know there are few people here in town who know better than everyone else, and who understand it's critical to amend the well established mode of town governance here in Vermont so that they can get their way and save the rest of us from.. well.. from having to keep hearing about how they know best.

Let's just give these folks what they want, however the want it, so that, perhaps, they'll shut up and live with what has turned into a beautiful and appealing element of Wilmington. But don't worry, they know best. I suspect at least some of them are much smarter and more informed about what's in everyone else's best interest. Certainly they have better taste than those elected and appointed officials that were in place to make this very decision.

I mean, after all, when the next town zoning decision doesn't go the way one or another of them wants, surely they won't drag the town through another costly waste of the rest of our time to remedy it in their favor. Not that this entire thing is about a bunch of angry people who have various personal grievances with the zoning board or anything of course - I'm sure there aren't a group of folks here in town that petty, selfish, and small minded...

The town allowed a structure to be erected that was not approved by design. Put the blame where blame is due....and deal with the consequences.

I agree. Some people are just belligerent and demanding, and will fight to the bitter end no matter the cost. This town is being held hostage by a bunch of vindictive, self-righteous bullies who won't rest until they get their way.
