Leaves left writer wondering

To the Editor:

I own a vacation home in Wilmington, and have been a reader of the “Deerfield Valley News” for about 8 years. However, I was extremely disappointed in the cover page of last week’s “Fall Foliage Tours 2009”.

My disappointment was in the falling leaves. They clearly looked more like marijuana leaves than maple leaves. I am a biology teacher and a parent, and while I know there are many advocates for legalizing marijuana, there are many of us who have been trying to teach our children the dangers of drug abuse. I strongly feel that the local paper is a poor place to advertise marijuana, and hope this picture was an oversight.

Editor’s note: Yes indeed, we have heard from a number of readers about the leaves on the front of the foliage section. We are in no way advocating for the use of marijuana. In fact, the leaves are a variety of maple. This week’s tour section has them reproduced in color, and hopefully readers will see the differences more clearly. We’re sorry for the confusion.

Variety of maple? I think you need to spend more time wandering outside in the woods dear editor. Just admit what happened (you subbed out the work.. or have a pothead on your staff) and drop the cheesy cover stories. 99% of us are smart enough to know better. Hell, the cops (Wilmington and Dover) have copies on the walls at their respective departments.. THEY know what those leaves are. I think they are qualified to identify them. I would love to point out that the marijuana plant is in no way related to the maple tree.
