Something needs to be done about drivers

To the Editor,

A year or two ago, Andy Rooney did a piece on “Sixty Minutes” reflecting on some of the strange, if not hazardous, driving habits of some drivers. He noted that while yellow on a traffic signal means slow down, some drivers take it to mean speed up.

With this in mind, we have observed that at the intersection of Route 9 and the road leading to Chimney Hill and Haystack, traffic lights have been installed where the road has been washed away, so as to allow one-way traffic. Yet, notwithstanding these traffic signals, when the light turns not only yellow but also red, not only do two or three vehicles proceed through the red light, but sometimes more.

This practice is not only illegal but discourteous as well. I don’t know how to remedy this situation given the configuration of the site and the difficulty in observing when drivers are violating the traffic signals.

However I would think something could be done so that those drivers who defy the traffic laws are ticketed.

It certainly would add some revenue to the town coffers.

I recently went through the green light as the last car in line. By the time my line of cars got through at the other end, the cars waiting there were shaking their fists at me as though I had gone through "illegally" having "supposedly" run a yellow or red light since the light had already turned green at their end. This was NOT the case. It is apparent that the time allotted for cars to get through is NOT SUFFICIENT considering the rough terrain, rubber necking, etc. that apparently goes on. A simple adjustment in the time allocated to pass would take care of the problem without causing a federal issue. Sheesh. People aren't all bad, you know.
