10 years ago: Bea Dunn celebrated 28 years behind the counter in the Deerfield Valley Elementary School cafeteria. Dunn said students’ favorite meals were pizza, hot dogs, hamburgers, and macaroni and cheese, and their least favorite meals were beef stroganoff and tuna or egg salad sandwiches.
The state of Vermont filed a second suit against Dover and Whitingham, demanding the towns pay the second installment of their education property tax for 1999.
Deerfield Valley Supply was offering an oil pre-buy price of 73 cents per gallon.
15 years ago:The Wardsboro Selectboard received more than 300 letters supporting River Bend Market in their bid to expand their store. The District II Environmental Board had turned down River Bend’s Act 250 application for the project.
A hike on the Deerfield Ridge Trail, connecting Mount Snow and Haystack, attracted more than 50 participants. The hike was organized to raise funds for the Valley Trail. The ridge trail was built in 1981 by the Hermitage and Mount Snow in cooperation with the U.S. Forest Service and the Deerfield Valley Stump Jumpers.
20 years ago:Two people were injured when the driver of West Dover Fire Department’s Engine 3 lost control on a sharp corner near the Austrian Haus and the truck rolled over while responding to a structure fire in Wilmington on Labor Day. The crash closed Route 100 for several hours and cut power and telephone service around the valley. Two heavy duty wreckers were required to right the truck. The house, in Chimney Hill, was a total loss, although not because of any lack of manpower or equipment due to the rollover.
25 years ago:In a letter to the editor recognizing National Banned Books week, Dover Free Library Trustee Frances Bond said, “We all agree as parents that it is the prerogative of any one parent to ask his or her own child not read certain book. But we also believe that one parent should not be allowed to prevent other parents’ children from reading the same book.”
According to one study, Vermont was one of the least expensive states in the nation in which to own and operate an automobile. The owner of a full-size car in rural Vermont paid about 19.57 cents per mile. The owner of the same car would pay about 24.11 cents per mile in Hartford, CT.
35 years ago:The “Green Mountain Boys,” a political action committee based in Newfane, advised readers to “Reject any land use plan, federal, state or local, that infringes upon your private property rights. Confiscation without just compensation is tyranny.” Readers could enroll in the “Green Mountain Boys” by mailing in a $5 or $10 membership fee.
40 years ago:The Deerfield Valley Square Dance Club had grown from 10 to 45 members in just three years. The club’s caller, Dick Willard, doubled as the club’s dance teacher. The club held dances twice each month and offered weekly lessons through the fall and winter.
“Here’s what happens when a jet aircraft manufacturer comes up with a sports car,” according to an advertisement for Wilmington Auto Sales. “It’s called the SAAB V-4 Sonett, and it does 100 (mph) plus with no sweat.”
