Mr. Stone was born on December 16, 1914, in Halifax, the son of Newton and Elgie (Goodnow) Stone. He grew up in Halifax and then moved to Jacksonville and was a graduate of Whitingham High School class of 1932. He was married to the former Alice Butterfield who predeceased him.
Mr. Stone worked on the Butterfield Farm during WWII and for the Town of Whitingham for several years. He worked for Mary and Robert Coombs as a salesman for five years and then as a candy maker for 47 years. Mr. Stone was a 67-year-member and past master of the Unity Lodge F&AM. He was an avid deer hunter, having shot 40 deer in his lifetime. He also enjoyed fishing and played baseball for the Jacksonville Indians. Mr. Stone and his wife Alice were members of the 251 Club, a club whose members have visited all 251 towns in Vermont.
He is survived by his three sons and daughters-in-law: Forrest and Molly Stone, of Cambridge, NY and Florida; Richard and Anna Stone, of Johnsonville, NY; and Robert and Ann Stone, of Wilmington and Florida; his grandchildren: Glen, Michael, Richard Jr., Laurie, Lucretia, Jeffrey, and Duane Stone; and 12 great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his sister, Gladys Parkhurst and his brothers, Floyd, Forrest, Merle, Verne, and Gerald.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, August 26, at the Covey and Allen Funeral Home, 44 East Main Street in Wilmington. Burial followed in Jacksonville Village Cemetery.
