To the Editor:

If anyone told me three years ago that I would walk a marathon, I would have fallen over backwards!

Well, I’m still laughing. I have completed three-Hartford and the Connecticut marathon twice.

Back then I spotted an article in Prevention Magazine that said “Yes you can walk a marathon,” and included a training schedule, so I did.

Since I decided to make that grueling hike I then thought my efforts should not be in vain so I chose a charity to raise money for, the Deerfield Valley Community Cares fuel assistance program right here in the valley. I was very successful, raising more than $2,000 each time.

After my second marathon I thought about having our own marathon right here in the valley for DVCC and that is what the DVCC board and I are working on now. You may have seen ads for the “Best Dam Walk” on September 13, that’s our walk! We are having a half marathon, 13.1 miles, and a regular hike, 6.6 miles or whatever you can do, starting at the dam in Whitingham and following the Hoot, Toot, and Whistle rail bed. The walk is almost flat and very beautiful and follows the lake. We would like all participants to raise at least $30 in pledges, and if you need to get in shape, do what I do and follow the prevention training schedule which can be found at www.prevention.com/team.

See you all on September 13.
