To the Editor:

Calvin Coolidge was a conservative, and I can’t imagine his reaction to the way things are going in Vermont.

Do you realize we are one of the highest taxed states in the union, and have been since Governor Kunin? In fact, it seems to me that Obama is going full speed ahead modeling his policies after California and Vermont. I guess he doesn’t understand these states are in bad shape financially.

While we might applaud the idea of protecting our environment or offering everyone free health care, the fact is we can’t finance these programs on the backs of hard-working people.

You can’t continue to raise taxes on businesses to help the people who don’t work because they’ve figured out the system.

Have you ever seen so many proud single mothers? The bureacracy of big government cannot be a viable solution to the country’s problems.

Many of the programs you listed are funded by businesses.

Businesses match Social Security and Medicare deductions, a huge expense. Businesses pay for Workers Compensation, Vermont businesses have to shoulder some of the cost of our state health care program. I bet that will increase too. Minimum wage? Maybe a good thing at one time, but totally outdated now.

“Free public education?” Have you looked at your real estate tax bill lately? The teachers union is just as out of control as any other union in this country. Public parks and highways? We probably would have them one way or another. The Internet?? Don’t tell me you think Al Gore invented it!

The Conservative Party is a group who splintered off from the Republicans around 1996. They have common sense ideas and expect every able-bodied person to take responsibility for themselves and their families. It’s ridiculous for you to rest on your laurels because your party founded these social programs. They are not the answer to prosperity and growth in America.

GeorgeWashington, Abraham Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt, Dwight Eisenhower, Ronald Reagan, Calvin Coolidge, and Booker T. Washington. This is a short list of great American Conservatives. Our country’s backbone was built on independent people and now we are catering to the dependency theory.
