A place where no one would disparage the pergola

To the Editor:

I have to agree with so many others in town that the new Bank Park is certainly a unique and inviting “gathering place.”

I shared with Joseph how I so enjoyed one night walking through the park exploring every special nook and cranny--the walkway, the river, the bench, the mini stone arena, the planters, and the flowers.

Being in the park, looking out, evoked a whole new perspective of the town and I, too, could feel the excitement of the completed project. I did remind Joseph, not to his surprise, that I still had the same feelings about the pergola that I had shared with him five months before.

I told him that there is so much more to the park than the pergola that I love and enjoy.

I’m not writing this letter to sway public opinion, but to dispel misconceptions about the intentions of the petition for the relocation of the pergola. It seems some people are of the impression that the petitioners do not like the park and would like to see its demise. Nothing could be further from the truth. It is about relocating the pergola to a space in which it can harmonize with its environment rather than conflict with it.

Wouldn’t it be nice if the pergola could stand in a place where no one need ever say “It doesn’t belong there”?

Respectfully submitted,

Laraine Morrow

While I agree with your sentiments regarding the Creemee stand, I have to admit the style of the new park really makes no sense at all in a New England town. Especially in a self-proclaimed "historical district." This whole thing isn't about not wanting a park, it's about the style of the park not fitting into a New England historical style. The park on it's own looks quite lovely, but this isn't the Adirondack Park, it's Vermont. At this point removing it would be a waste of time and money, but that doesn't mean the park makes any more sense because of it.

I don't understand why people object to a little shade. Maybe in the middle of August you will understand how nice it is to have a place to get a little shade, and perhaps see climbing plants. For the town that kicked out Gene's Creemee stand to make way for a pizza box-store, there are always lots of objections to pretty much anything and they often have nothing to do with aesthetics.

Like many others, I believe the vest pocket park, when finished, will be a valuable addition to our community. However, with that said, I believe the pergola to be inappropriate in the historic downtown district and should be removed.
