TOWNSHEND- Janet Nancy Stowell, 76, of Grafton Road, a lifelong resident of the West River Valley, died early Saturday morning, July 19, at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, NH.

Mrs. Stowell was born in West Townshend on January 13, 1938, the daughter of Donald and Ruth (Ballantine) Gould. She was raised and educated in Townshend and was a graduate of Leland & Gray Seminary, class of 1956.

For many years she served as lister and various offices for the town of Townshend and she also drove the school bus in the Townshend area on a part-time basis. She loved her home and family and was a faithful and devoted wife and loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.

Mrs. Stowell enjoyed helping others and was very active within her community.

Of her civic activities, she served as membership chairman for the American Legion Auxiliary, West River Post #16, a representative for Townshend and served on the board of Senior Solutions, and was an active member of the Leland & Gray Alumni Association.

Additionally, Mrs. Stowell was a member and served as treasurer of the Townshend Ladies Church Circle and a member of the Happy Homemakers Club.

On December 30, 1967 in Grafton she was married to Irvin P. Stowell who survives. Besides her husband of 46 years, she leaves one son, Mitchell Putnam, of Townshend; three daughters, Laurie Nystrom, of Townshend, Sarah Stark, of Hinsdale, NH, and Andrea Royce, of Townsend; two brothers, John Gould, of Lyndonville, and Larry Gould, of Townshend; two sisters, Martha Morrison, of Brookline, and Mary Merrill, of Townshend. Additionally she leaves eight grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by one sister, Betty Eriksen.

Graveside committal services will be conducted Thursday, July 31, at 1:30 pm in Oakwood Cemetery, Townshend. There are no calling hours.

Memorial contributions in Mrs. Stowell’s name may be made to Leland & Gray Alumni Association, Townshend Ladies Church Circle, or Grace Cottage Hospital.
