A lot of zeros

To the Editor,

The question was “If you had a million dollar bill, how many million dollar bills are needed to make a trillion?” The first answer I got from a friend in Wilmington was ten thousand million dollar bills. When I called Senator Bernie Sanders’ office, a pleasant young man answered the phone and his answer was one thousand million dollar bills.

Let’s review the math. 1 million equals 1 plus six zeros. 1 billion equals 1 plus nine zeros. One trillion equals one plus 12 zeros, or one million, one million dollar bills.

Soon this country will owe seventeen trillion dollars, and the President wants to spend a trillion dollars more in the next budget than he will take in.

I am nearly 74, but the next time you young people go to the polls, you might want to think about how much you are going to have to pay back.
