WARDSBORO- Susan (Potter) Smith, 76, of Sheldon Hill Road and Chesham, NH, died unexpectedly Friday morning, October 4, at her home.

She was born in Boston, MA, on November 19, 1936, the daughter of Dr.Theodore Alexander and Constance (Dort) Potter. Raised and educated in West Newton, MA, and Chesham, NH, she was a graduate of Pine Manor College in Chestnut Hill, MA.

Mrs. Smith was a prolific painter and accomplished artist whose vivid style was steeped firmly in New England realism. She had in fact just completed hanging a show titled “There Are Places I Remember…All My Life,” which is now at the library of Arlington.

In her garden, studio, kitchen, in a boat or on a wooded trail, Mrs. Smith found joy and shared it with all who loved her dearly. She and her loving family cherished their time together in Rowayton, CT, and at Silver Lake in Chesham.

For many years she held membership in the Silver Mine Artist Guild of New Canaan, CT.

Survivors include her devoted and loving husband of 34 years, Fredrick B. Smith; and her children, Christine Poler Fleming (James), of Simbury, CT; Theodore Avery Poler, of East Dover; Kimberly Poler Albanese (Marc), of Hudson, MA; and Timothy Edson Poler (Sara), of Fairfield, CT; and her beloved grandchildren, all of whom learned to ski near the mountains surrounding Grandma’s house at Long Meadow Farm, Michael, Andrew, and Alexander Fleming, Eli and Georgia Albanese, and Reveley, Cameron, and Charles Poler.

Additionally she leaves her step-children Lisa Smith Ruoff, Wendy Sutton, Mark Smith, Curtis Smith, and Paige Beard, and many nieces and nephews in New England.

She was predeceased by one sister, Jane W. Gowdy.

Mrs. Smith will also be missed by her dear friends who have been an integral part of her life for decades.

A memorial service in celebration of her life was conducted Wednesday, October 9, at 2 pm, at the Wardsboro Methodist Church, 122 Main Street, Wardsboro. Burial was held at the Willard Hill Cemetery, Chesham, NH. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Mrs. Smith’s name may be made to Grace Cottage Hospital, PO Box 1, Route 35, Townshend, VT 05353.
