School welcomes new teacher

READSBORO- With Michael Casalinova, “Mr C,” moving next door to teach the first and second-grade, Readsboro Central School welcomes first-year teacher Katie Shearer to take his place, teaching the nine students of the third- and fourth-grade combined classroom.

Originally from New York, Shearer lives in Brattleboro. She received her master’s degree from Marlboro College’s SPARK teacher education program. While this is Shearer’s first time teaching elementary school, she spent last year as a student teacher and substitute at Dummerston Middle School. Shearer also has a history of working in education, but in an administrative capacity. Joining the staff at RCS means she will be able to do exactly what she got into teaching for: working in the classroom. “While I worked in education I missed direct contact with students and younger kids and that’s what I love about teaching,” said Shearer.

“Teaching is thinking about being creative with what learning is, and making things interactive and fun. That’s a challenge for me and I find enjoyment in piecing all that together.”

Shearer’s philosophy in the classroom is that students should treat their peers, as well as their teacher, as they would like to be treated. She also has her students identify the guidelines of what it is to be responsible, kind, and motivated, and what that looks like socially and academically. “We have been finding these things out and what we continue to find is that we’ll work hard, but in creative and fun ways.”

Being on the same team as parents is important to Shearer, who admits she is an “over-communicator.” According to Shearer, keeping parents in the loop has been easy so far by working with parents in the school and the parent-teacher group.
