The warm weather has moved in and we can bid farewell to winter. We did not have the long cold periods that are normal, but the cost of fuels kept rising and unless you belong to a buying group, each fuel delivery brought a new high in the price. The state cut down on their fuel assistance, leaving even more people unable to afford to keep themselves warm. So, once again, we had a large number of people in the valley unable to keep up with their heating bills.
In order to thank those who have contributed to our fund and to keep the general public informed, we publish our expenditures at the end of each winter season. From September 15, 2012 through May 1, 2013, the DVCC spent $64,142 on various types of fuel for people within the Deerfield Valley.
Raising the money to provide this help becomes more difficult each year. To those of you who have helped us, we are very thankful for your generosity. We continue to rely on a small percentage of people each year who give generously and support our efforts. We are particularly grateful to the members of the Propane Dover buying group who this winter contributed nearly $28,000 to the DVCC to help their neighbors who were in need. For anyone interested in joining the Propane Dover buying group for next winter, you can get information by contacting Jim McDevitt at firstname.lastname@example.org.
We hope that you join us for our two major fundraising efforts this summer and fall. “Tunes ‘n’Blooms” is a cocktail party/garden tour which is held at the home of Dr. and Mrs. Forte, and will take place on Saturday, July 20 (rain date July 21). Posters will appear around town in June as well as in this newspaper. The “Best Dam Walk in Vermont” is an enjoyable way to take a walk, or a run, a long one or a short one, and get your friends to sponsor you to help us raise money for next winter. It will take place on Saturday, September 28. That weekend the valley will also be hosting its first film festival. So plan to attend the entire weekend of activities. Information and registration forms can be found at bestdamwalk.com or by calling (802) 464-5872.
